Becoming a skilled couponer means being aware of every possible avenue for saving money! Now that you have the coupon basics and price matching down, it’s time to move on to two other in-store avenues that may help you save money!
Rain Checks
A rain check is voucher written out to the costumer as an assurance that an on sale item that is sold out may be purchased at a later date at the same discounted price. These little pieces of paper can come in handy for couponers! If you ever head into a store to pick up a sale item and they don’t have any in-stock, be sure to ask your cashier or a customer service rep for a rain check. Not all stores will offer rain checks, so be sure to check your store’s policy.
To answer your next question – Yes, you can use a rain check and a coupon together! The trick is getting back to the store when they are in stock before your coupon expires 🙂
Scanning Code of Practice (SCOP)
The Scanning Code of Practice is something that people often hear about but don’t fully understand. I’m here to break it down for you!
PURPOSE
The Scanner Price Accuracy Voluntary Code is just that, voluntary. It has evolved from collaborative efforts of the Retail Council of Canada (RCC), the Canadian Association of Chain Drugs Stores (CACDS) and the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers (CFIG) to bring retailer commitment to scanner price accuracy. Stores do not have to participate in this program.
SCOPE
The SCOP applies to all scanned, bar-coded or PLU merchandise sold in participating stores. This excludes prescription and behind-the-counter drugs or cosmetics and individually priced items *tip- For Example – clearance priced items*. The code also does not apply in provinces & territories where existing legislation or regulation exists.
THE CODE
- Free Item Scanner Policy
If the scanned price of a product at checkout is higher than the priced on the shelf or advertised by the store, the lower price will be honoured. If the correct price of the item is $10 or less, the costumer will receive the product for free. If the correct price of the item is more than $10, the retailer will give the costumer a discount of $10 off the correct price.
- Multiple Items
If the customer is purchasing multiples of the incorrectly scanned item, the retailer will correct the price of each item but is only obligated to apply the Free Item Scanner Policy to one of the items.
- Participating Retailers
As listed on the Retail Council of Canada, the following stores / chains participate in the Scanning Code of Practice. View the Canadian Retailers Family Tree to see what stores belong to each corporation.
