I am heartbroken. Seriously.
I’m actually devastated by this news, and if it affects you, you’re probably going to be too!
Way back, what seems like forever ago now (I’m thinking it was more like 2012-ish), Royal Bank and Shoppers Drug Mart announced they were partnering up to bring us the RBC Optimum Account & Mastercard. This account/card allowed users to collect 1 Optimum Point per dollar spent regardless of where. Purchases made at SDM using the Optimum Card qualified for double points. I signed up right away!
Needless to say, I was able to accumulated A LOT of Optimum Points just using my debit card on gas, groceries, coupon shops, dinner out, whatever!
But sadly, my happy little Optimum World came crashing down yesterday when I received a letter from Royal Bank informing me that effective mid-August, my beloved RBC Optimum Account would cease to exist. :-O
Now obviously my account isn’t going anywhere, it will be changed over to standard account automatically, but still! Those Optimum Points really come in handy!
I’m unsure what prompted the discontinuation but I have to speculate. Could it be too many points were being handed out? Did Loblaws decided to cancel it now that they own Shoppers? Maybe RBC wanted to bring more attention back to their base accounts?
Who knows what the cause is, but whatever the case, it sucks! So between now and August, my mission is to earn as many points as possible!
Did you have an RBC Optimum Account? Did you get the discontinuation letter yet? What are your thoughts on the whole thing? Are you as sad as me? Let’s talk about it on the SaveaLoonie Facebook Page!
