Welcome to the new My Adventures in Crafting blog series on SaveaLoonie! This is something completely new for me and not just because its a new section on SaveaLoonie. I’m not a crafter – never have been and never thought I would be. I’ve never really had the creative drive or know-how to make anything worth talking about. That being said, let me tell you how this all got started.
In June Ryan and I moved into a bigger home. Being a bigger home there was a lot more space to fill and we just didn’t have the stuff to fill it. I have a vision of how I want our house decorated but everything that we have looked at is so freaking expensive! I have also recently become a huge fan of Pinterest! There are so many creative and beautiful ideas there and was inspired to try some for myself! And that is how it all began!
So I picked out a few projects to try and wrote a list of supplies I would need and off to the dollar store I went! For my first project I decided to be highly ambitious and try out a fall wreath for our front door! Sorry for the darkness of the photos – I did this at night!
Supplies:
2 x Leaf Garland @ $2 each
1 x bag of Pinecones @ $2
1 x bag of foam Pumpkins & Gourds @ $1
1 x foam ring @ $9.99- 40% off coupon = $6 (I picked this up at Michael’s since they didn’t have any at Dollarama)
Step 1
After gathering all of my supplies I began by clipping all of the leaves and berries off the garlands. When I was clipping them off I tried to leave some of the wire from the garland attached to each leaf.
Step 2
After I cleared all the leaves off the wire garland I decided to make use of it too by wrapping it around the foam ring. I figured the twiggy appearance would only add to the fall feeling 🙂 As an added bonus, the wire already had a loop at one end so it was perfect for hanging. I simply left a few inches from the loop down and then wrapped the remaining length around and tied it back off at the top. I also decided to leave the extra pieces straight up so that it wasn’t entirely covered after I added the leaves.
Step 3
The next thing I did was I began sticking the wire left on each leaf into the foam ring to secure it. The leaves that didn’t have any wire left on them I attached with a hot glue gun. I also attached a pinecone, some pumpkins and berry springs with the extra wire from the garland. I added some hot glue to them too just to be sure they stuck.
Step 4
Once I had all of the leaves and accessories added I folded over the remaining twigs to give add the final touch! It took a bit of work to get all of the ring covered and as you may notice there are still a few green spots visible. If I were to do this again I would probably spray paint the ring black or a more neutral colour. This is how the finished product turned out.
Once the wreath was completed, I used a suction cup with a hook on it to hang the wreath off the door. I am pretty thrilled with how my first crafting project turned out! I learned some things and am very excited to attempt my next project! When I was at Michael’s buying the foam ring I saw similar wreaths selling for $29.99 and up!
