Start A New Email Account
This is our number 1 Coupon Safety tip! Your email address is the number one piece of information that is required when signing up e-newsletters. The more things you sign up for, the more emails you are going to get to your inbox. We strongly recommend getting a free email address (from Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo etc) before signing up for anything.
When you start to sign up for multiple coupon sites, freebie offers, newsletters and contests your inbox is soon going to be over-flowing! To avoid swamping the email address you use for day to day things, only sign up for newsletters using your new email address.
Canadian, Not American
Many companies and brands have separate websites for Canadian and American visitors. Be sure you are on a Canadian site before signing up for the newsletter. There is nothing more annoying that coupon offers in your inbox that are American!
If you can’t decide if the site is American or Canadian, it is probably both! If that is the case, make sure to include your country if you are asked during the sign up process.
If They Want Your Birthday, Give It To Them
When you sign up for most newsletters, they will ask for you birthday. Most times it isn’t mandatory but usually it is a good idea! Loads of companies and stores offer special discounts and coupons for subscribers on their birthday. If you feel comfortable giving out that information, it is most definitely worth it!
Check Your Inbox Regularly
If you are one of those people who only checks your email inbox once a week, newsletters are not going to be for you. If you are going to subscribe to dozens of mailing lists, your inbox will be full everyday. In any given day, I can get 100 emails or more! Imagine that piling up for a week!
Another reason it is important to check your emails regularly, many offers are only valid for a day or 2. If you don’t check your email until 3 days after the deal is over, it doesn’t do you much good.
Watch For Confirmations & Welcome Bonuses
When you sign up for a newsletter, often you will have to confirm your subscription. Be sure to watch your inbox for these confirmation links. If you don’t click them, you won’t be added to the list!
Most companies will offer new email subscribers a special Welcome discount offer. This could be a coupon code for online shopping, an in-store coupon or a combination of both. These offers are for you only and usually have a short time limit for redemption.
