Couponing Terms and Abbreviations
Navigating through the coupon world can be difficult with all these abbreviations and terms. Do you not know what an FPC or a NF mean? Scroll through the list and discover the meaning of many of the common “codes” you see.

TERM | DESCRIPTION |
BOGO, B1G1 | Buy one, get one |
BOGOF | Buy one, get one free |
BOGO ## | Buy one, get one percentage number off (eg. BOGO50 = Buy one, get one 50% off) |
B2G2 | Buy two, get two – same applies to other number combinations (eg. B2G1, B3G1) |
WUB | When you buy |
WUB2 | When you buy 2 – same applies to other numbers (eg. WUB3, WUB4) |
MFC | Manufacturer Coupon – a coupon distributed by the manufacturer of the product |
FPC | Free Product Coupon – a coupon that entitles you to the product for free |
MIR | Mail in Rebate – a form supplied by the manufacturer that you return to the company to claim money back on a product purchased. These are only available on select items at certain times. They generally require a receipt or other proof of purchase to accompany the rebate form. |
Tear pad | A store display that contains a stack of coupons for interested customers to take. |
Booklet | An in-store display containing product information/recipes that also contain coupons. |
Peelie | A coupon that is attached to the outside packaging of a product usually be means of tape or glue. |
Product Coupon | A coupon that is printed or found on the inside packaging of a product. |
Sample Coupon | A coupon that is included in a free product sample. |
P&G | Proctor & Gamble, insert or mail out coupons |

SSP | SmartSource print |
SMP | Specially Marked Packages |
SASE | Self Addressed Stamped Envelope |
SPC | Student Price Card |
AM | Air Miles |
SCOP | Scanning Code of Practice |
RC | Rain check |
POP | Proof of Purchase |
UPC | Universal Product Code – a code located somewhere on the products packaging |
Stacking | This refers to the use of more than one coupon per single item. This practice is currently only allowed in specific stores in Western Canada. Read more |
Purchase | A single item from your cart; each individual item is its own purchase. |
Transaction | The total of all items begin purchased on a single receipt. |
Customer | Individual present and responsible for the transaction. |
Identical Coupon | 2 or more coupons that bare the same dollar value and UPC as one another. |
Limit one coupon per purchase | You can use one identical coupon on each like item purchased. (eg. 3 identical coupons for dog teats can be used on 3 like products) |
Limit one coupon per transaction | You can use only one identical coupon per transaction. If you have multiples of an identical coupon you must make a separate transaction for each coupon you wish to use. |
Limit one coupon per customer/ person | You may only use one coupon for each customer present and responsible for an individual transaction. If you wish to use multiples of these, you will have to return to the store the next day to use it again. |
Limit one coupon per household | There may only be one redemption of this coupon per household. |
