So I went grocery shopping last night and got the shock of my life as a strolled through the produce section.
I’ve been avoiding the grocery stores lately and trying to use up what we have on hand but needed to venture out yesterday for a few things. I was actually appalled at the prices of fresh produce. I’ve been reading about it for weeks now, but this was the first time I actually experienced it first hand. And it was a RUDE awakening.
I knew it wasn’t going to be good when as soon as I entered the produce section there was posted signage explaining that due to weather conditions and the declining Loonie, the stores were seeing a sharp rise in prices.
That didn’t even prepare me for what I was about to see. The prices for celery, cauliflower, lettuce and berries were higher than I had ever seen them. How is someone expected to feed a family a healthy diet when it’s $8 for a head of cauliflower or $4 for lettuce?!? I got what I had to and got out of there!
The real shocking moment came at checkout. As I was cashing out, I over heard the cashier in the lane next to me ask her customer if she still wanted the grapes. The customer looked up and the cashier remarked – “They’re $14”. FOR GRAPES?!?!
After double checking it wasn’t a pricing error or something, the customer kindly refused the grapes and they both laughed awkwardly about the outrageous price. My mind was officially blown.
A recent study showed that consumers added $325 to their grocery bill in 2015 compared to 2014 – and are expected to add another $345 on top of that in 2016! It looks like 2016 is going to be an important year to be a couponer and save those Loonies!
